Online skills development workshops for researchers

Research communication workshops

Knowing how to communicate about research in an engaging way can be enormously useful for researchers. Good communication skills are key to everything from writing a good grant application to giving a great presentation at a conference to maximising the impact of your research.

But communication skills take time and effort to develop, and aren’t typically something you explicitly get taught as a researcher. That’s where I come in.

I’m a researcher who became a research communicator, so I know exactly how weird it feels to try to get your head around communicating research.

My small-group online workshops are interactive, fun, and focused on helping you develop the knowledge and practical skills you need to be a confident and effective communicator.

I focus mainly on research comms for people working in healthcare, psychology, neuroscience and related fields, but if you’re working in another area and not sure whether my training is right for you, you’re welcome to book in a free 20 min chat with me to learn more.

At the moment I’m offering Research Comms 101, which is for you if you’re completely new to research communication and want to start at the beginning, but…

More online workshops coming soon

In the near future I’ll also be offering workshops on research comms topics like:

  • Dealing with public speaking nerves

  • The importance of empathy in research comms

  • Going beyond ‘I’ll put it on social media’

  • Interactive and artistic approaches to research communication

I’m also planning workshops in other areas including:

  • Dealing with academic stressors

  • Setting boundaries and sticking to them

  • Procrastination and motivation

  • Coping with conferences when you’re an introvert

  • How to survive your viva (surviva)

  • Teaching and supervision skills

That isn’t quite what I need. Can I…?

  • ... book you to deliver tailored research comms training?

Yes! If you have specific training needs that aren’t covered by my online training, you can hire me to create and deliver something tailored to a small or large group - online or in-person.

  • ... have some 1:1 time with you to develop my research comms skills?

Yes! I offer 30 and 60 minute research comms skills development tutorials.

  • ...get your advice or support on a specific research comms issue?

Yes! I offer 30, 60 and 90 minute online research comms clinics.

  • ... hire you to do research comms for my project?pay an expert to do the research communications element of your project?

Yes! If you’re a researcher or organisation working on healthcare, neuroscience or psychological research, you can hire me to strategise, create and support delivery of communications about specific projects.

What attendees say about my workshops

  • "Thank you for a great wellbeing session! We get a lot of exposure to polished-up academic trajectories of excellence and perfection but being open about the challenges that come with the job at both professional and personal levels means we can learn from and support each other and gain opportunities for people, ideas and collaborations to develop and flourish."

    - Dr Niki Chouliara, Lecturer in Psychology

  • "Clare's own experiences as an academic really influenced how she was able to empathise and value our lived experiences which was refreshing and very insightful. I would heartily recommend Clare to deliver your workshops as she really cares about your personal journey and supporting you in getting there on your own terms."

    - Dr Emma Ferguson-Coleman, Lecturer in Dementia and Ageing, GIAM, University of West London

  • "Your workshop on finding balance in academia was so good. I had some really meaningful discussions with researchers at different stages in their careers."

    - Nesh, wellbeing workshop participant

  • "Clare handles workshops beautifully, with confidence, humour and a great deal of knowledge about teaching others."

    - NB, collaborator

  • "I participated in one of Clare's workshops on academic stressors several years ago. She emphasised that while mindfulness can be helpful, it isn't for everyone and for every situation, and shared some alternative coping techniques. Her words have stayed with me ever since. I still use what I learned that day to help myself in difficult situations."

    - Sam W, wellbeing workshop participant
